A spate of recent incidents has earned Delhi the title of 'Rape Capital' of the nation. Sexual assaults shockingly involving minors, pleads law is not enough, implores for more viable solutions to help and ensure women's safety. Government think-tanks and people are working together with NGOs, Women's groups and Human Rights groups towards this. Interestingly, a group of Engineering students from Chennai have turned up with a novel solution. They have designed a lingerie that gives electric shocks to the attacker. Read about this desperate measure in desperate times or watch the video.
Changing the law is not enough, society per se needs to change its mind set for a long lasting solution. One such step taken by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is worth mentioning. CISF declared 2013 as 'the year of safety and security of women'. CISF organised a gender-sensitivity workshop with discussions on “Gender sensitization – challenges ahead and the mechanism to cope with them”, and “Dealing with sexual harassment at the workplace”. Very rightly Mamta Sharma, Chairperson, national Commission for Women (NCW) in her address urged the necessity of such workshops be conducted at school and college levels.
